Keep a notebook you are not proud of
The usefuuul notebook is the ugly one. Neatness is a form of editing, and editing too early kills ideas.
A beautiful notebook is a trap. Once a page looks good, you start protecting it, and a protected page stops collecting the half-formed thoughts that were the whole point.
Write badly on purpose
Cross things out. Leave the bad ideas in. The record of what did not work is often more useful six months later than the tidy conclusion you eventually reached.
